On April 17, 1931 Allstate began selling insurance policies to their customers as part of the larger corporation known as the Sears Roebuck Company. Back then, customers could conveniently shop for everything they needed for their homes, including insurance coverage, all in one place. In 1934, Allstate opened its first separate, free-standing sales office in Chicago, IL.
The name “Allstate” came about as the result of a contest held by Sears in 1931 to find a name for a brand of tires they offered to their customers. The name “Allstate” was picked as the winner.
From those humble beginnings, Allstate had grown into the second largest private auto and home insurance provider in the nation.
